Fractionated crystallization in a polydisperse mixture of hard spheres

چکیده

We consider the nature of the fluid–solid phase transition in a polydisperse mixture of hard spheres. For a sufficiently polydisperse mixture (s.0.085) crystallization occurs with simultaneous fractionation. At the fluid–solid boundary, a broad fluid diameter distribution is split into a number of narrower fractions, each of which then crystallize. The number of crystalline phases increases with the overall level of polydispersity. At high densities, freezing is followed by a sequence of demixing transitions in the polydisperse crystal. © 1998 American Institute of Physics. @S0021-9606~98!51548-6#

The stability limit of the fluid phase of polydisperse sticky spheres

It has been shown by Stell [J. Stat. Phys., 63, 1203 (1991)] that at low temperature monodisperse sticky spheres collapse to form coexisting close-packed solid and infinitely dilute gases. We show that polydisperse sticky spheres also collapse and calculate the collapse temperature. The polydisperse spheres separate into fractions with narrower polydispersities which can then solidify. This is ...

Depletion induced demixing in polydisperse mixtures of hard spheres

Polydisperse mixtures are those in which components with a whole range of sizes are present. It is shown that the fluid phase of polydisperse hard spheres is thermodynamically unstable unless the density of large spheres decreases at least exponentially as their size increases. The instability is with respect to the large spheres crystallising out into multiple solid phases. PACS: 64.10.+h, 64....

The effect of polydispersity on colloidal phase transitions

A polydisperse mixture of hard spheres with a continuous range of sizes is a simple model of many colloidal suspensions. A well-known example [1] is poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) stabilised by a thin polymeric layer of poly(12-hydroxystearic acid) and dispersed in a good solvent such as decalin. The colloidal particles in this suspension interact via a short-range repulsion, which is well re...

Molecular dynamics simulations of crystallization of hard spheres.

We have carried out molecular dynamics simulations of the crystallization of hard spheres modeling colloidal systems that are studied in conventional and space-based experiments. We use microscopic probes to investigate the effects of gravitational forces, polydispersity, and of bounding walls on the phase structure. The simulations employed an extensive exclusive particle grid method and the t...

Crystallization kinetics of polydisperse colloidal hard spheres. II. Binary mixtures.

In this paper we present measurements of the crystallization kinetics of binary mixtures of two different sized hard sphere particles. The growth of the Bragg reflections over time were analyzed to yield the crystallite scattering vector, the total amount of crystal, and the average linear crystal size. It was observed that a particle size distribution skewed to higher sized particles has a les...
